The Cape May Lighthouse sits next to Saint Mary by-the-Sea, a retreat house sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia to provide opportunities for annual retreat for the members of the Congregation and others who desire a similar retreat experience. The lighthouse and the cross of the retreat are a centerpiece of the image. Thus the Light and the Salvation. The retreat operated for over 100 years but was recently closed permanently on September 24, 2021. The Nuns believe the property should be razed and the beach front land be returned to its natural state and saved from development.
